AWUJALE CHANGES THE RULE; NO MORE SECRET CULT BURIAL FOR OBAS | ASKS PEOPLE TO FLOG OSUGBO

AWUJALE CHANGES THE RULE; NO MORE SECRET CULT BURIAL FOR OBAS | ASKS PEOPLE TO FLOG OSUGBO

The Awujale and Paramount ruler  of  Ijebuland Oba Dr. Sikiru Kayode Adetona who also doubles as  the President of the Ijebu Traditional Council may have set to clash with traditional worshipers otherwise called 'Osugbo' over burial rites for any  traditional rulers that passes on.

According to Platform Times, Awujale who  said there is no custom or tradition in Ijebuland that supports  such practice, described  the actions of such people as abomination.

He  however,  referred  to the Osugbos as balifs , explaining  that Osugbo  is just an association, not a chieftancy title or any cult to fear or revere.

Oba Adetona stated this while addressing some Christians and Muslim faithful who converged on his palace to kick start the annual weeklong prayer for him and the Ijebuland.

Platform Times gathered that the paramount  had some years ago abolished the practice  whereby the  demised king were  buried by some secret cult members who are often referred to as the Osugbos.

It was further gathered that,  since  the abolishment , few Obas who joined their ancestors had  been buried according to their faiths.

However,  the monarch while speaking   against the backdrop of a recent development which made the Ijebu Traditional Council to renew  its earlier stand on the issue disclosed that a 24-man committee would soon be inaugurated from the six local government areas of Ijebuland.

According to him,  the move  is  to ensure that any king that joined his ancestors are given  befitting burial according to the  faith of such monach he practised  while alive.

The Monarch said the resolution was made at the meeting held on the 28th of December,2016 to form a committee of four people, two each  from the Christian and Islamic religions  in the six local government of Ijebuland.

The  committee was  to meet with the members of Osugbo cult  who they alleged  were hijacking corpses of demised King, collect and dispossess the family of some possession on the pretence that they want to bury the monach according to what the tradition demands.

The Monarch said...

"They are not authorized to bury any king that joined his ancestors or perform any rituals on the body."

"Osugbos,  according to our culture here are like balifs  under our culture, if there is any fight in those days especially concerning land boundaries or farm boundaries, they are the ones that the king will send to restore normalcy there and bring report back to the king." Oba Adetona submitted.

Awujale further lamented that  the members of  osugbos whom he said have constituted  themselves to something else now , were also  the executioner who carries out death penalty on any convicted criminals in those days.

"Now they do what they want, why, because we give them the right to do such , when they arrive at the burial programme of  any Oba and everybody runs  away".

"No, this is nonsense which must stop ,henceforth, because they are mere messengers", the Oba said.

He advised the people not to run away again but pick up their cane and send them away.

Awujale added that henceforth any culture that is not in vogue and not in tandem with the modern day reality would be jettisoned  and thrown away.

The Ijebu paramount ruler however noted that the way other Yoruba people buried their kings has nothing to do with the Ijebu tradition and this is what the Ijebu Traditional Council has now unanimously agreed upon.

Gbengande of Ososa, Oba Adetoye Alatishe and other members of the Ijebu Traditional Council said they all aligned with the decision of Awujale,  describing it as a welcome development.

“Who is the President of Nigeria?” – Dr. Muhammadu Buhari – Miss Anambra contestant answers

JUST when we thought we have heard the last of Miss Anambra beauty pageant mess, after the harried one concerning Miss Anambra 2015 winner, Chidinma Okeke and the Anambra Broadcasting Services, the Yuletide has served us another juicy one from Nnewi, from same Anambra State.
This happened last Friday, December 30, 2016 at the Ifeanyi Uba’s sponsored Nnewi Youths Fiesta where all the sixteen contestants for the Miss Nnewi beauty pageant were disqualified for failing to answer basic current affairs questions correctly.
The gathering was thoroughly pissed for the inability of the contestants to answer questions like who the founder of the Dr. Ifeanyi Uba foundation is; What they would do if they become the president of Nigeria; and Who the president of Nigeria is? A contestant excitedly told the gathering that the current president of the Federal Republic is Dr. Muhammadu Buhari.
Most said, ‘No Idea.’ Yet these are supposed to be undergraduates!
Intelligence quotient At the end of the exercise, E-Daily learnt there was no winner as it was a brazen embarrassment to the sensibilities of not only the organizers but the state as a whole.
“The organizers of the event should please, try and test the intelligence quotient of would-be contestants before bringing them out for public parade. Or else, the embarrassment will continue as the state itself has not recovered from the cucumber saga,” a guest observes.
At the end of the day, no winner was declared as the organisers were thoroughly embarrassed. The car prize meant for the winner had to be taken away.

Borno prosecutes four women for selling newborn babies for N100,000

The Borno State government yesterday prosecuted Ngozi Nwokocha and three other female suspects for alleged child trafficking at the state’s High Court No. 13, in Maiduguri.
The offences, according to the court registrar, Bilyaminu Hassan, were allegedly committed at the Government Reservation Area (GRA) and Galadima areas of Maiduguri metropolis on January 15, 2016, August 20, 2016 and August 30, 2016.
Hassan said that Kaltime Mohammed, Aisha Bukar and Zara Haruna allegedly sold baby boys and girls to Ngozi Nwokocha at the price of N100,000 each. He said the offence is contrary to 1994 Borno State Law of section 278 and 279 and punishable under the penal code.

“The main suspect, Nwokocha and three female suspects committed an immoral offence and were brought before Justice Fadawu Umaru for exchanging newly born babies at the price of N100,000 each on various dates in Maiduguri,” said Hassan.
The four suspects, however, denied committing the act. Consequently, the prosecuting lawyer, who doubles as the Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice, Kaka Shehu Lawan, said considering the gravity of the alleged offences, he asked that the case be adjourned to enable him present nine witnesses before the court.
Justice Umaru granted the request and adjourned the case to next week Monday, January 9, 2017 for further hearing.

Gambia’s President-elect Adama Barrow has been killed

Banjul – Gambia’s president-elect Adama Barrow who vowed to take office on January 19 despite the refusal of outgoing President Yahya Jammeh to give up power has been killed by unknown assailants.

The assailants overpowered the security guards of Mr. Barrow, leaving two of the guards dead and other six injured from gunshots.
President Yahya Jammeh, the ‘prime suspect’ has denied any involvement in the incident.

The assassination of Mr. Barrow comes few days after he referred to the country’s constitution that a court action taken by Jammeh cannot prevent the winner of the poll from assuming office as mandated by the constitution.

He was responding to Jammeh, who said Saturday that a decision of the Economic Community of West African States to send troops to ensure a peaceful transition of power was a “declaration of war” and called for a fresh poll.

“It should be crystal clear that filing an election petition is the private matter of a loser in an election. It does not prevent mandatory constitutional processes from taking place,” Barrow said.
ECOWAS, the African Union and the United Nations could only intervene if “the two presidents fail to do, with impeccable thoroughness, what the constitution of the republic demands,” he said.

“Any president whose term of office expires who takes up arms against an incoming president whose term should begin according to law, would be regarded by the international community as a rebel leader,” Barrow warned.

The authorities meanwhile shut down two radio stations, the Gambia Press Union said.

Teranga FM is considered critical of the Jammeh government and has been closed down twice before.
Hilltop radio station was also ordered to close by the National Intelligence Agency, which gave no reason for the measure, the union said.

The Gambia Press Union expressed concern that this could signal the beginning of a crackdown on independent media amid the country’s escalating p
